AN INTERIOR OF ISTANBUL

AN INTERIOR OF ISTANBUL
Rupert Dixon was born in 1970 and graduated with honours from Cheltenham School of Art in 1993. He lives and works in London, with a permanent studio in Streatham Hill. His abstract geometric paintings are executed in mixed media on canvas.
This series represents a radical departure from Dixon’s earlier body of work, while developing the interior theme which has always informed his work, with several paintings based on the floor plans of some of humanity's greatest archi-tectural achievements. Whereas before he captured the inevitable decline of the grand palaces, theatres and stately homes of Europe in imagined dream-like inte-riors, the majority of these new works pay tribute to these classic buildings' en-during legacy in a modern and stylish tableau.
By referring to ever-popular abstract artistic movements from the mid-20th cen-tury, such as expressionism, minimalism and geometric abstraction, Dixon also continues to discuss the relationship between changing fashions and enduring appeal. Rather than portraying the inevitability of grand decline, his geometric abstract images convey the hope he finds in our human ability to build purpose-fully on solid and enduring foundations in every aspect of life.
The result is a synthesis which combines a classical sense of proportion with a contemporary taste for simplicity, all within a visual debate about notions of art-historical relevance and importance.
